When you’re putting an emergency kit together for your car, it’s a practical idea to include a set of jumper cables. They don’t require much space and could help another or you off the side of the road. They are straightforward to use with a little instruction and practice. The first thing to consider is that each end contains a red clamp for a positive charge and a black clamp for a negative. The second thing is that you don’t want the clamps to touch another metal surface once you’ve started to connect to a battery.

Begin with the dead battery first. Connect the positive cable to the battery terminal with a plus sign and the black cable to the terminal with the minus sign. Repeat the process on the good battery. After you’ve connected them, let them charge for a couple of minutes. Rev the engine and try to start the dead car. It should fire up within a couple of tires. If you’re not getting anywhere after several attempts, it could indicate there’s another electrical issue. It’s best to stop and have your vehicle serviced.
